30 years ago this month Castleblayney Cancer Society met for the first time in response to a growing need for support for families and patients who were going through difficult times as a result of a cancer diagnosis. True to the wonderful community spirit that defines Castleblayney, a committee of truly inspirational locals set about fundraising to assist those in need. This committee understood only too well that the needs of people going through a cancer diagnosis could be extremely varied, from transport, to financial support to end of life care. The discreet manner in which the committee went about their work ensured that people in the local community recognized the necessity to keep the committee resourced ensuring this work would continue to this very day.

People within the community and further afield began the wonderful tradition of local people undertaking to fundraise so that the work of the Castleblayney Cancer Society could continue.

Down through the 30 years since it’s inception, fundraisers have walked, run, cycled, organised tractor runs, golf classics, head shaves, parachute dives, raffles coffee mornings to name but a few of the various fundraising activities. Fundraisers have always done their work with good cheer, a good heart and many from simple gratitude.

The committee of Castleblayney Cancer Society would like to say Thank You to all those people who have supported or fundraised in anyway over the last 30 years and so they extend an open invitation to a cuppa and a chat in Iontas on Saturday 12^th October. Please feel welcome to pop in for a while anytime between 11am and 1pm. There will be a small display of old photos to jog some memories. This is not a fundraiser, just a heartfelt thank you from Castleblayney Cancer Society on behalf of the local community of Castleblayney and it’s hinterland.
